This conference is one of the largest gatherings of Business Objects users and business intelligence experts in the Americas. It is also one of the first ever technology events instituting a green initiative. From recycled materials and programs to biodegradable pens to carbon offsetting, we're doing our part to go green!
Carbon Offset Challenge
Business Objects is hosting a Carbon Offset Challenge at the Insight Americas conference. Business Objects is committed to taking action to begin to neutralize the environmental impact our business has on earth’s resources and has partnered with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to purchase Green Tags to offset the carbon emissions based on this challenge.
Proceeds from the sale of Green Tags support the development of:
- Renewable energy on our power grids
- Solar power systems for schools and public buildings
- Wind power systems for farms, ranches and communities
- Watershed restoration to improve water quality and native fish habitat
In addition, attendees of the Insight Americas conference will be challenged to correctly estimate the total carbon impact of all attendees traveling to and from the conference. The attendee who enters the closest estimate by the deadline will win an Apple iPhone and sufficient Green Tags to offset the carbon emitted by energy used in the winner’s home for a year!
Following is a list of green products attendees will recieve:
- Individual water bottles made of recycled materials
- All printed materials on recycled paper
- Luggage tag with strap made from recycled material
- Notepad made of recycled paper
- Biodegradable pens
Here are other ways Business Objects and the Orange County Convention Center are working to support this initiative:
- Recycled napkins for meals, breaks and evening functions
- Recycled paper boxes for our box lunches
- Glass barware and mugs instead of plastics
- Water coolers will be available at the convention center - reduces the waste of plastics with individual water bottles which will conserve approximately 10,000 water bottles
- "How to save energy" cards will be available at all conference hotels
- We repurpose signage and banners from previous events whenever possible
The Orange County Convention Center's (OCCC) Building Services section recently received ISO 14001:2004 certification for its Environmental Management System (EMS). It is the first convention center in the United States to ever receive the certification.
Through EMS, the OCCC's accomplishments include:
- 80 percent of all dry waste with 40 percent recovery on all waste in 2006
- 9,000 tons of material diverted for remanufacture
- 871 tons of cardboard and 5.8 tons of office paper recycled
- $77,500 in tipping fees saved due to recycling efforts
- $31,435 in recycling rebates
- Streamlined communications concerning environmental practices
- Increased environmental awareness among employees
