| Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre Program: AquaVan Grant: $4,800 Impact: Enable the AquaVan to visit three inner-city schools in Vancouver. Four hundred students in 15 classes will benefit from interactive classes designed to effect the conservation of aquatic life. Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA) Program: Growing Kids Grant: $5,000 Impact: Extend funding for food-growing programs in inner-city schools which teach children the science of food-growing and establish a lasting resource garden for the community. Gordon Neighbourhood House Program: English as a Second Language, Parent & Tot Grant: $5,000 Impact: Purchase supplies to launch a new program aimed at teaching ESL to parents and their children in three inner-city housing co-ops. H.R. MacMillan Space Centre Program: Sharing Space Grant: $5,000 Impact: Train inner-city high school students to deliver Space and Renewable Energy units to elementary school children in their own communities. Vancouver Public Schools Foundation Program: Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) Grant: $5,000 Impact: Enable the purchase of multilingual resources and the operation of an early literacy program for parents and their children at two inner-city schools. One to One Literacy Society Grant: $5,000 Impact: Partial funding for a coordinator to train and organize 200 volunteers to read to 680 children in 44 schools who are reading more than one grade level behind their age group. HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) Grant: $5,000 Impact: Fund teaching supplies for home visitors working with vulnerable families with preschool children to equip parents to be the child's first educator. YWCA Program: Crabtree Corner Mother Goose Program Grant: $5,000 Impact: Fund the startup and operation of an early literacy program which emphasizes rhyming and singing for children and moms in the inner city. Vancouver Society of Children's Centres (VSOCC) Program: Preschool bursary program Grant: $5,000 Impact: Create a bursary program available to make preschool/daycare experience available to children from marginalized families. Maywood Community School Program: Raise the Bar Grant: $5,000 Impact: To purchase age-appropriate reading material for students in grades 4-7 to learn in small groups with homogenous reading abilities. Leave Out ViolencE Program: Photojournalism Program Grant: $5,000 Impact: Fund journalism program designed to enable teen victims or perpetrators of violence to explore, express and write of their feelings of youth culture and violence. OPTIONS Program: Parent Child Mother Goose Grant: $5,000 Impact: Fund the pilot of a Mother Goose early literacy program specifically designed for Punjabi children and their caregivers. Immigrant Services Society (in partnership with Burnaby School District) Program: Taking Action for Change Grant: $5,000 Impact: Pilot an interpreter-assisted homework club for refugee children and youth of Afghan, African and Kurdish descent. Take a Hike Youth at Risk Foundation Program: Take a Hike Grant: $5,000 Impact: Fund adventure-based learning activities used in combination with academics to encourage at-risk youth to complete their high-school education. Science World Program: Super Science Club Grant: $5,000 Impact: Students in grades 2-7 participate in hands-on, science-based, after-school programming two days a week for 10 weeks. Arts Umbrella Program: Media Arts Grant: $5,000 Impact: Provide approximately 25 bursaries for children wishing to attend media arts courses focused on animation, graphic design, film-making, and web design. |

Access for Support and Development Centre Program: Supplementary School Grant: 3,000 GBP Impact: Conduct a supplementary weekend school for one year for Somali refugee children (ages 5-17) to develop their English, Math, and Science skills. Chatterbox Program: Speech Therapy for children with Down's Syndrome Grant: 3,000 GBP Impact: Provide speech and language therapy for more than one year for eight children ages 2-3 with Down's Syndrome. Assisting Berkshire Children to Read (ABC to Read) Program: Expansion of Reading Program into East Berkshire Grant: 3,000 GBP Impact: Match trained community volunteers with primary school children to develop their reading and literacy skills. Funding will extend the service to the East Berkshire area. Volunteer Reading Help London North West Program: Volunteer Reading Help Grant: 3,000 GBP Impact: Match trained community volunteers with children ages 6-11 to develop their reading and literacy skills. Funding will extend the service to Brent district. VH Whizz Kids Program: After School IT Club Grant: 2,860 GBP Impact: Fund IT courses for children ages 4-15 to prepare them for Oxford and Cambridge Recognition. Involve the parents to promote and develop learning relationships between parents and children. Harrow Somali Women's Action Group Grant: 3,000 GBP Impact: Fund a science/IT teacher to develop skills for Somali children ages 6-16. Volunteer Reading Help Ealing Program: Volunteer Reading Help Grant: 3,000 GBP Impact: Match trained community volunteers with primary school children to develop their reading and literacy skills. Funding will be applied to a neighborhood with a high proportion of ESL children. Bungay Childcare Centre Program: Bungay Childcare Centre Grant: 3,000 GBP Impact: Purchase educational resources for childcare program for 3-4 year olds. Fund certification program for the staff to enable them to better assess the children's education needs. Ipswich Community Voluntary Services Program: Making Tracks Grant: 1,100 GBP Impact: Purchase relevant educational resources for a drop center in four locations that enables children ages 8-13 who are struggling in school to access educational and career development advice. Oasis Training Centre Program: Youth Inclusion Project Grant: 1,500 GBP and Business Objects computers Impact: Invest in up-to-date educational software for an outreach program for children ages 12-18 who have been excluded from school and are trying to achieve their GCSE and OCR qualifications. |
